Ecologically informed values of Biodiversity for Conservation and Restora - tion
نویسنده
چکیده
A list of “ecologically informed values” of biodiversity is introduced. These aspects have rarely been the object of normative treatments. Ecologists introduced these scientific concepts as “values”, even though they are based on factual information only. Thus, ecological evaluation often remains implicit or personal. Besides diversity also complementarity, rarity, threat, irreplaceability, and representativeness may be, after specification, used for ecologically informed evaluation of biodiversity. Three entities (a species, an ecosystem, an individual) are evaluated according to the scheme developed in the preceding. For all entities instrumental, eudaemonic and moral values can be described in monetary and nonmonetary terms. It becomes obvious that the diversity arguments advanced in ecologically informed language do not fit well into these categories. A context free evaluation of biodiversity cannot be carried out. Even if the value of nature and biotic goods as resources are accepted, no absolute value of biodiversity can be hold. Neither total diversity nor the spatial pattern of diversity on earth deserves any categorial protection. It is concluded that, first, the classification of values has to be improved. This can be done, second, by integrating recent ecological concepts into an advanced value concept. Ultimately, the value of biodiversity can only be the result, not the prerequisite, of an informed evaluation process.

Changing perspectives on biodiversity conservation: from species protec- tion to regional sustainability
Biodiversity is the basis for ecosystem goods and services that provide for human survival and prosperity. With a rapidly increasing human population and its demands for natural resources, landscapes are being fragmented, habitats are being destroyed, and biodiversity is declining. How can biodiversity be effectively conserved in the face of increasing human pressures? In this paper, I review c...

متن کاملAssessment and Spatial Planning of Landscape Ecological Connectivity for Biodiversity Management (Case Study: Qazvin Province)
Habitat and ecosystem fragmentation and, consequently, the loss of landscape connectivity are major causes of biodiversity destruction, leading to disruption of material, energy, and information flow at the landscape scale. Given the importance of this issue, the current study aimed to evaluate the ecological connectivity and spatial planning of Qazvin Province, in order to re-establish and pro...
متن کاملRe-establishing an ecological discourse in the policy debate over how to value ecosystems and biodiversity.
In this paper we explore the discourses of ecology, environmental economics, new environmental pragmatism and social ecological economics as they relate to the value of ecosystems and biodiversity. Conceptualizing biodiversity and ecosystems as goods and services that can be represented by monetary values in policy processes is an economic discourse being increasingly championed by ecologists a...
متن کاملEvaluating the potential for conservation development: biophysical, economic, and institutional perspectives.
The widespread conversion of rural land to low-density residential development poses an immediate threat to biodiversity and to the provision of ecosystem services. Given that development will continue and environmental stakes are high, analyzing alternative growth strategies is critical. Conservation development is one such strategy that has the potential to benefit ecosystems and diverse stak...
